Can I charge only one battery or does it always have to be two?
You can charge a single battery in either of the two slots. In fact, if you only use one slot, the charger can dedicate more power to it (up to 1000mA) to finish faster.
What happens if I put the battery in backwards?
Nothing bad will happen. The Nitecore NEW i2 has physical and electronic reverse polarity protection. If it detects that the poles are misplaced, the lights will blink and the charger will not send power.
