VapVip Vaping School: beginner guide to start vaping
Chapter 5

What do you need to start vaping? Beginner’s guide

Starting vaping is not about buying the most expensive device or the strongest liquid. It is about choosing a simple device, a suitable liquid and a nicotine strength consistent with your previous tobacco consumption.

Guide intended for adult smokers. Vaping is not intended for minors or non-smokers. If you have medical concerns, consult a healthcare professional.

1. First important advice: start simple and buy small

At the beginning, buy small quantities. Do not spend too much on large bottles of liquid, big packs of coils or overly advanced devices until you know which draw style, flavour and nicotine level suit you. The initial goal is not to collect gear: it is to replace combustible cigarettes in a practical way.

2. Options to take the first step

Pre-filled vapers

The simplest option. They come ready to use, do not require refilling and have almost no learning curve. They fit if you want to try the vaping format before buying a refillable device.

Best for: first trial, travel, occasional use or people who want zero maintenance.

Pod systems

Small, light and discreet. They are one of the best starter options because they are usually easy to use, consume little liquid and work very well with a tight cigarette-like draw.

Best for: adult smokers looking for something simple, discreet and compatible with 50/50 liquids or nicotine salts depending on the coil.

Vape kits

Devices with more battery, more autonomy and more adjustment options. They can be a good choice if you want a more robust device, but they are not always the simplest first experience.

Best for: users who want more autonomy, more control and a device with available replacements.

3. What you really need to start

You do not need to overcomplicate things. To start well, you need a suitable device, compatible liquid, replacements and basic charging and maintenance knowledge.

1. Device

For most beginners, a pod or simple kit with an MTL draw is easier than a large high-power device.

2. Compatible liquid

The liquid must match the coil. For tight-draw pods, 50/50 liquids or nicotine salts often work well depending on device and user profile.

3. Replacements

Keep at least one spare coil, cartridge or pod. A coil can fail, burn or wear out earlier than expected.

4. Charging and maintenance

Most current devices use USB-C. Avoid aggressive fast chargers if the manufacturer does not recommend them.

4. Common mistakes when starting

Buying a device that is too powerful

More power does not mean a better start. For many adult smokers, a tight and stable draw works better than large clouds.

Choosing too little nicotine

Being under-supplied may prevent vaping from replacing cigarettes. Adjusting nicotine properly at the beginning is more important than reducing it quickly.

Not priming the coil properly

A dry coil burns quickly and tastes bad. Before vaping, let the cotton absorb liquid for a few minutes.

Buying too many flavours

Test gradually. It is normal if the first flavour is not the final one. Start with simple options and adjust as you go.

Choosing well from the beginning changes the experience

A poorly chosen first device can make you think vaping does not work for you, when the real problem was the device, coil, liquid or nicotine strength. Do not improvise: start with something simple, coherent and easy to maintain.

Frequently asked questions for starting vaping

What do I need to buy to start vaping?

You need a simple device, compatible liquid, a spare coil or cartridge and basic knowledge of how to charge and maintain it. You do not need to buy a lot of gear at the beginning.

Is it better to start with a pod or a large kit?

For most beginners, a simple pod is usually easier. A large kit may offer more autonomy and power, but it also requires more adjustment and uses more liquid.

Which liquid should I choose at the beginning?

Start with simple flavours and a ratio compatible with your device. If you are coming from tobacco, a tobacco flavour or a soft fruit profile may be easier than a very complex flavour.

How many coils or cartridges do I need?

At least one spare. Coils are consumables and may wear out, burn or change the flavour of the liquid when they reach the end of their useful life.

Is it normal not to get it right the first time?

Yes. Sometimes flavour, nicotine strength, coil or draw style need adjusting. This is why it is better to start with small quantities and ask for advice if you are unsure.
